PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new travel control device of an automobile, which restrains the deterioration in followability to a preceding vehicle when traveling while tracking to the preceding vehicle and can provide the fuel consumption reduction effect.SOLUTION: "A first control mode" of tracking-traveling while keeping a preset inter-vehicle distance with a preceding vehicle and controlling travel so as to become a preset set vehicle speed, "a second control mode" of controlling travel so as to travel by inertia by executing clutch opening of a transmission and automatic stopping of an engine, and "a third control mode" of controlling the travel so as to travel while tracking in an optimal fuel consumption area of the engine by executing control of an engine speed and control of a shift ratio of a transmission, are set. A travel state of one's own vehicle is controlled by selecting any one of the control modes such as "the first control mode" to "the third control mode" on the basis of a relation of travel states of the preceding vehicle and the one's own vehicle.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 8

    【課題】先行車両に追従して走行している場合に先行車両への追従性の悪化を抑制すると共に、燃費低減効果が得られる新規な自動車の走行制御装置を提供することにある。【解決手段】先行車両と予め設定した車間距離を保ちながら追従走行すると共に、予め設定された設定車速になるように走行制御する「第1制御モード」と、変速機のクラッチ開放とエンジンの自動停止を行って惰性で走行するように走行制御する「第2制御モード」と、エンジン回転数の制御及び変速機の変速比の制御を行なってエンジンの最適燃費領域で追従して走行するように走行制御する「第3制御モード」とを設定し、先行車両と自車両の走行状態の関連性から「第1制御モード」乃至「第3制御モード」の何れかの制御モードを選択して自車両の走行状態を制御する。【選択図】図8
