PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit capable of downsizing the device.SOLUTION: A backlight unit 20 includes: a housing 21 having an opening in which a liquid crystal display device is arranged; a light source 32 arranged in the housing; and an optical member 60, arranged in the housing, for changing an optical path of the light radiated by the light source toward the liquid crystal display device. The optical member has a columnar part 60A formed in a triangular prism shape by a translucent material. In the columnar part, one side wall part is an incident wall part 61 where the light radiated from the light source enters, and another side wall part is an emission wall part 62 from which the light emits toward the liquid crystal display device. Also, the other side wall part is a reflection wall part 63 where the light which has entered from the incident wall part is reflected toward the emission wall part inside the columnar part. The shape of at least one side wall part out of the incident wall part, the emission wall part and the reflection wall part is a curved surface shape having an optical characteristic which changes an increase/degrease degree of optical path width W1 of the light going through the side wall part to an increase side or to the decrease side.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 12
