PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ship propulsion unit capable of obtaining the stable thrust even at a low speed and a ship.SOLUTION: The electric propulsion unit 4 has a cylindrical duct 41 with a stator part 47 and a propeller part 42. The propeller part 42 includes a rim 51 and blades 52 formed in its inside. The rim 51 is placed in the position facing the stator part 47 and has a rotor part 53 constituting the electric motor 50 as well as the stator part 47. The duct 41 forms a gap between the rim 51 and the duct, into which the surrounding water is introduced, and provides a fluid bearing 20 lubricating between the rim 51 and the duct with water introduced into the gap from the surrounding. A controller to control the electric motor 50 drives the electric motor 50 by the rotation speed control in a rotation speed control region where the output command is less than a specified value, and drives the electric motor 50 by the torque control in a torque control region where the output command exceeds the specified value.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
