PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lane boundary monitoring method for setting a condition of indicating proximity to a lane boundary depending on the dangerousness at the time of coming into contact with a target located on the lane boundary.SOLUTION: A lane boundary monitoring method includes the steps of: radiating an output wave for distance measurement from a distance measurement sensor 22 mounted on a vehicle 80 toward the road surface around a vehicle 80 and generating a detection wave on the basis of a reflection wave (S1); detecting at least one of the height of a target 85 located on the lane boundary and the smoothness of a change in the surface height of the target 85 on the basis of the spacial change of the detection wave (S3, S4); and setting a distance threshold value for determining whether or not proximity to the lane boundary requires a caution depending on the distance between the vehicle 80 and the lane boundary, according to the at least one od the height and the smoothness (S5).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 9
