PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cargo handling apparatus that can lift up with good balance and safely carry even a lengthy steel material that meanders in diverse forms and with large meandering amounts.SOLUTION: In a cargo handling apparatus 10, cargo handling units 11, which comprise: a plurality of lifting tools 20 for holding a lengthy steel material S; a beam 15 suspending the plurality of lifting tools 20; a plurality of cranes 12 suspending the beam 15; strikers, installed in the lifting tools 20, which activate when contacting with the lengthy steel material S; and a crane control portion that controls crane winding machines 13 mounted on the cranes 12 on the basis of detected signals by the strikers and adjusts vertical distances between the cranes 12 and the beam 15, are arranged adjacently in a longitudinal direction of the lengthy steel material S. Beam end parts of the cargo handling units 11 are connected to beam end parts of the adjacent cargo handling units 11 through connection parts 16.
