PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a visual line detection device and visual line detection method that can correctly detect visual line directions of users.SOLUTION: An HUD (Visual line direction detection) device 3 comprises: an IR light source 27 that applies IR light 29 using an IR light source 27; a projection unit that reflects the IR light upon wind shield 9 or combiner, and includes a cold mirror 21 projecting the IR light toward a direction having an eye 15 of a user 13; an image acquisition unit that acquires an IR camera image of a range containing the eye from an IR camera 5 photographing the eye from a direction different from a direction where the IR light is incident into the eye; a recognition unit that recognizes a pupil and Purkinje image in the IR camera image acquired by the image acquisition unit; and a visual line direction detection unit that detects a visual line direction of the user from a position relation between the pupil and the Purkinje image recognized by the recognition unit.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
