PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of controlling an expansion/contraction actuator in which the movement of a rod due to external force is hard to occur, an expansion/contraction actuator, and a steering device.SOLUTION: A method of controlling an expansion/contraction actuator 1 equipped with a motor 10 for generating rotational force, a rod 50 which can be reciprocated in an axial direction, a conversion mechanism which converts the rotational force of the motor 10 into the reciprocating of the rod 50; an electromagnetic brake device 60 for braking the reciprocating of the rod 50, and an ECU 130 which controls the motor 10 and the electromagnetic brake device 60, includes a position holding start step for starting position holding control holding a position of the rod 50; a release signal output step for outputting a releasing signal of a brake to the electromagnetic brake device 60; a position holding releasing step for releasing the position holding control after releasing the brake by the electromagnetic brake device 60; and a rod moving step for driving the motor 10 to move the rod 50.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
