PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an impact absorption type steering shaft which can prevent generation of a peak load and also can prevent an excessive increase of a slide resistance.SOLUTION: An impact absorption type steering shaft 10 of which one end is connected to a steering wheel of a vehicle and which absorbs an impact energy by contraction at the time of collision of the vehicle is equipped with: an inner shaft 12 on an outer peripheral surface of which a male tooth part 12A is formed; and an outer shaft 11 on an inner peripheral surface of which a female tooth part 11A is formed, and into which one side of the inner shaft 12 is inserted whereby the female tooth part 11A is slidably engaged with the male tooth part 12A. The inner shaft 12 has: a taper part 12B on the other side of the inner shaft 12 with respect to the male tooth part 12A, which has an outer diameter which becomes larger as approaching the other side and absorbs an impact at the time of collision of the vehicle; and a small diameter part 12C which is formed on the other side with respect to the taper part 12B, and has an outer diameter smaller than a maximum outer diameter of the taper part 12B.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1A
