PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-expulsive de-icing actuator.SOLUTION: An apparatus 100 for removing ice from an object (e.g., in-flight ice removal from the skin of an aircraft) comprises: an actuator assembly 101, 102 that forms an elongated electrically conductive loop. The actuator is mounted in a position enabling the actuator to impact the object to be de-iced in response to movement of the loop that is produced by electric current pulses flowing in opposite directions in two mechanically independent loop subassemblies. The loop subassemblies include multiple electrically conductive elements 101A, 101B, 101C, 102A, 102B, 102C interconnected at ends thereof using elongated flexible connectors 111 to 115 in order to introduce a physical discontinuity that reduces any restriction of relative movement of the subassembly ends. It is thereby possible to realize improved performance and alleviation of fatigue failure as compared with a fixed structure with an encapsulated element.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 12
