PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a side airbag to be designed so that only a sewn part for breaking surface skins covering a side pad is broken and the side pad corresponding to parts other than the sewn part for breaking is not broken.SOLUTION: The method for designing a side airbag of a vehicle performs steps of: deriving loads acting on a front surface 2a and a left-side surface 2b of a side airbag 2 modeled after a quadratic prism; deriving a displacement amount of a side pad 5b at the time when the derived loads are set as loads on the side pad 5b; deriving displacement amounts H1 and H2 at the time when a sewn part 8 for breaking surface skins 5d is broken; determining, from characteristics of displacement amounts of the side pad 5b, loads on the side pad 5b required for breaking the surface skins 5d; and suppressing the determined loads from exceeding compression resistance toward a displacement direction X due to compression resistance and tensile resistance toward a displacement direction Y due to tensile resistance of a shortest site T of the side pad 5b so as to prevent occurrence of inner explosion.

    【課題】サイドパッドを包被する表皮の破断用縫製部のみが破断し、破断用縫製部以外に対応するサイドパッドが破断することのないようにサイドエアバッグを設計できるようにする。【解決手段】四角柱を模したサイドエアバッグ2の前面2aおよび左側面2bに作用する荷重を導出し、導出した荷重をサイドパッド5bに対する荷重としたときのサイドパッド5bの変位量を導出し、表皮5dの破断用縫製部8が破断に至る際の変位量H1,H2を導出し、サイドパッド5dの変位量特性から、表皮5dを破断させるのに要するサイドパッド5bへの荷重を求め、求めた荷重が、サイドパッド5bの最短部位Tの圧縮耐力による変位方向Xへの圧縮耐力および引張り耐力による変位方向Yへの引張り耐力を上回らないようにして内爆の発生を未然に回避する。【選択図】図6
