An electric vehicle (EV) charging cable provides an anti-theft and deterrent mechanism and includes: an elongate conductor configurable to provide charging current to an EV; and at least one conduit arranged to extend along the charging cable, the conduit containing a security marker (e.g., SmartWater (RTM)). The conduit may extend along the entire length of the charging cable. The conduit may be at least partially filled with the security marker and may contain cooling fluid. The conduit is held at a predetermined pressure, which may be measured by a pressure sensor. An alert system may generate an alarm based on a signal from the pressure sensor, indicating deviation of the detected pressure from the known pressure. The elongate conductor and conduit may be located within an outer sheath or housing. The security marker: may be a forensic marker component having a specific combination of predetermined characteristics; and may be identifiable using a corresponding detector that discerns identity information encoded by the security marker. The security marker may comprise at least one of: a particulate; a marker composition; a fluid; a gel; a liquid; a particle suspended in a fluid; and a composition dissolved, or mixed, with a fluid.
