A vehicle hood retention system comprises a flap 110 mounted longitudinally to the chassis, and articulated to open with a mouth longitudinally aligned with the chassis. The hood is typically a butterfly bonnet 110. A portion of the rearward edge of the bonnet 110 is longitudinally in line with part of a windscreen. First and members are mounted on the underside of the flap, and on the chassis, respectively. All or part of the first and second members are longitudinally and vertically aligned in spaced separation with respect to the chassis when the flap is in the closed position. The position of the members does not block the flap from moving to the closed position, or from opening. The first and second members may be connected by a cable, wire, rope, cord or string on a reel. The invention addresses the potential behaviour of a butterfly bonnet in crash conditions. Associated features include central strut 113, crossbars (115, 116 fig 1b), engine mount tower (117 fig 1b), wheel support (118 fig 1b), rear strut tower (119 fig 1b) and windshield connector (120 fig 1b).
