A canopy extension and retraction mechanism 100 comprises a primary arm 102 connected to a base structure 108, and fixed 110 and pivotable 112 secondary arms connected to the primary arm. An actuator 122 is configured to pivot the primary arm to move the canopy system between retracted and extended states. A motion transfer mechanism is arranged such that a rotatable guiding member 124 connected to the primary arm rotates when the primary arm pivots. The fixed secondary arm is connected to the guiding member such that the arm rotates with the rotatable member. A canopy is connected between each of the secondary arms so that when the fixed arm is rotated by the guiding member, a tension is created in the canopy such that the fixed arm pulls the pivoting arms causing the secondary arms to fan outwardly to extend the canopy. The canopy may be used to provide shade on a boat.
