A sensor system for monitoring elongation or bending of an elongate element such as a rope 10 comprises at least two supports 12,14 that are attachable to the element at respective positions spaced along the element. At least one of the supports carries an laterally offset emitter for emitting a signal 20 and at least one of the supports carries a laterally offset receiver for receiving the signal. A processor is configured to determine the distance between the supports by measuring time of flight of the signal from the emitter to the receiver along the signal transmission path. The emitter and receiver may be located at the same support, with a toroidal reflector at the second support for reflecting a signal. A plurality of emitters and receivers may be used and may transmit an acoustic signal. The system can be used to monitor subsea anchor cables, moorings, pipes and risers.
