A lighting system for an aircraft 100 having a propeller 104, the propeller including a hub 108 and a plurality of rotor blades 112. The lighting system comprises a light source 114 mounted within the hub and configured to emit light in a first direction. An optical element 116 is mounted within the hub and receives the light emitted from the light source and redirects the light radially outward from the hub so that light reflects off the rotor blades. The hub may be partially transparent. The optical element may be an internal reflection lens. Also provided for is and aircraft comprising the lighting system. The aircraft may be an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or urban air mobility (UAM) vehicle. The lighting system is configured to prevent bird strikes.
