A method for assembling a heavy component 300, such as an aircraft landing gear assembly to part of an aircraft body 350, involves using a funnel device 380 to guide part of the component into its assembly position, for example, a position where lug 301,351,352 mount holes 307,355,356 of the component and part partially overlap, so that a tapered pin 400 can be inserted and moved through the holes to fully align the holes. Preferably, the pin is a pintle pin, the tapered end extending axially for a distance at least equal to the non-tapered radius of the pin, at an angle of between 1-25°. The funnel device may be configured to be supported by the body in a predetermined position and orientation during an assembly process, by friction or by other retaining means.
