A method of determining whether a power system component has exceeded a predetermined temperature after being switched off at which damage of the component is likely to occur, such as a maximum temperature rating of the component. A first temperature of the component is measured before the power system has been switched off. A second temperature of the component is measured when the power system is next switched on. The component will have exceeded the predetermined temperature if the first temperature is above a first threshold and the second temperature is below a second threshold, the second threshold being below the first threshold. The power system may be an internal combustion engine, a fuel cell system or an electric motor, such as for driving a vehicle. The temperature of the component before the power system has been switched off may be performed periodically, and a temperature obtained immediately before the power system is switched off used as the first temperature. Data indicating a number of times the temperature of the component has exceeded the predetermined temperature may be stored in a memory.
