A battery arrangement 430 for an electrically-powered vehicle 130 comprises: a battery cell 240 operable to store electrical charge to power the electrically-powered vehicle 130; and a charging controller 410 in communication with the battery cell, wherein the charging controller is operable to determine the source of the charge provided to the battery cell and enables or disables charging of the battery cell depending on the determined source of the charge provided to the battery cell. The arrangement may include a meter 420 to record the amount of charge provided to the battery cell. The source may be determined based on whether the vehicle is moving over a threshold speed to permit charging of the vehicle using regenerative braking and hybrid vehicles charging from an internal combustion engine or hydrogen fuel cell. The controller may provide a unique identifier to authenticate a charging operation in communication with a remote authentication system, authorised via signals from either the charging source and/or a remote system. Unauthenticated charging is only permitted when details of the charge are recorded so that the cost of the charge and/or fuel duties can be paid.
