Estimating energy requirement 116 for a vehicle traversing a route, based on vehicle energy information 112 (e.g. energy consumption at various speed), and route data 114 including predicted average speed on the route and predicted deviation from the average speed. The energy requirement for each route segments of the route is first calculated. A deviation from the average speed may be an interruption causing the vehicle to stop (e.g. traffic light or junctions, roundabouts) and the number of interruptions on the route. Vehicle energy information 112 may also include current energy status, and a future energy status may further be calculated, and may take into account the driving style of the driver. Estimated energy requirement 116 may be calculated from a formula equation: energy requirement at predicted average speed, divided by a factor (close to but less than one) to the power of the number of interruptions on the route.
