A payload carrier 10 has a receptacle 12 with a shell 14 defining a payload volume 16, the shell having layers (e.g. outer shell 24 & liner 32, fig 5), at least one of a composite (e.g. fibre-reinforced polymer material). The payload carrier 10 includes an external support frame 18 in the form of an “exoskeleton” or formed integrally with the outer shell layer 24. The shell 14 & frame 18 are shaped by an analysis-led design approach based on load paths associated with payload operative forces. The shell can be hemispherical or semi-cylindrical (fig 10).
