A protective cover for the hull of a vessel in the water having a rectangular rear portion and tapered front portion. The cover comprises a sheet having at least two layers, a first layer with a density higher than the density of the water, and a second layer 4 with a density lower than the density of water. In use the second layer provides buoyancy to the first layer and presses the first layer against the vessel hull. The second layer has a triangular cut-out 3 along the centre line and tapering towards the front of the protector, to allow the first layer to be submerged for unimpeded boat entry. The first layer may be woven glass fibre sealed with a polymer coating. Alternatively, the first layer may be PVC fabric and the lower layer LDPE. The cover may comprise low density rods that are fitted inside fabric channel sleeves 1 along the side and front edges of the cover to provide rigidity. A rear section 2 of the cover can be lifted once the boat is docked on the cover.
