A zero turning radius mower park brake system 100 includes a pair of steering levers (101, fig 1) attached to steering arm brackets 102 that are pivotable forward and reverse on a first axis 112 for rotating a pair of traction drive wheels in forward or reverse, and pivotable outwardly on a second axis 113 while in a neutral position. A wire cable 110 connects each steering arm bracket 102 to a park brake. The wire cable 110 retracts sufficiently to actuate the park brake when the steering arm bracket 102 is pivoted outwardly on the second axis 113 but does not actuate the park brake when the steering arm bracket 102 it pivoted forward or reverse. A spring 114 provides a force urging the park brake into engagement. The spring have an over centre bias to hold in the steering arm bracket in its outward position. The park brake can include an actuator (126, fig 5) that may be a pawl pivoting on an axis (128, fig 5) to move teeth on the pawl into engagement with a parking gear (130, fig 5).
