Contactor sequencing for a battery is controlled for different circuit architectures, contactor properties and current directions. The method involves determining an architecture of the circuit 300, which includes at least a positive contactor assembly and a negative contactor assembly. When the positive contactor assembly has more than one positive contactor 311,321,331,360,371, a priority is assigned to each positive contactor. When the negative contactor assembly has more than one negative contactor 312,322,332,340,351, a priority is assigned to each negative contactor. A direction of current flow through the circuit is determined, indicating whether the battery is charging or discharging. First and second ratings of the positive contactor assembly are determined for current flow in first and second directions, respectively. Third and fourth ratings of the negative contactor assembly are determined for current flow in first and second directions, respectively. The sequence of switching the positive and negative contactor assemblies is determined based on at least one of: the priorities assigned to the positive contactors; the priorities assigned to the negative contactors; the direction of current flow; the first and second ratings of the positive contactor assembly; and the third and fourth ratings of the negative contactor assembly. The positive and negative contactor assemblies are switched according to the sequence.
