A boat 100 having an energy capturing system for powering motion of the boat. The boat comprises a hull 101, a deck 102 positioned within the hull, and a plurality of energy capture mechanisms 103 coupled between the hull and the deck such that movement of the hull relative to the deck transfers kinetic energy to the energy capture mechanisms while damping motion of the deck. In another embodiment a flexible edging (405, Fig 4) attaches the deck to an internal side of the hull. A boat comprising a hull and a deck and an active control system for sensing loads on the hull is also disclosed. A rigid inflatable boat (600, Fig 6) with a linear generator (603, Fig 6) coupled to the inflatable tube (604, Fig 6) is disclosed as is a rigid inflatable boat with an energy capturing system (703, Fig 7) and at least one inflatable tube (704, Fig 7).
