A worker safety system 1 in a train depot (Fig.1,100) has a safe setting which configures movement control device 9 (e.g. signals 11,21,31, speaker 12,22 or derailer 32) to protect against train movement along a respective railroad (10, 20,Fig.1) and an unsafe setting which permits such train movement. A biometric reader (e.g. camera 42) obtains data from a logging-in worker (e.g. his image). A biometric (e.g. facial) recognition routine determines whether he is authorised to work on the railroad and, if so, updates a list of workers 7a,7b to register him as working on the railroad. Switching away from the safe setting is prevented unless all workers are deregistered from the list. A one-way encryption function may be applied to the worker’s image to generate derived data for comparison to facial data in an authorised worker database 6a. The derailer may comprise a train presence sensor and delay switching to the protecting configuration until a train has passed.
