A pneumatic brake system for a towing and towed vehicle, wherein the brake system comprises means for supplying a supply pressure (e.g. supply coupling, red line 26) and means for supplying a control pressure (e.g. control coupling, yellow line 28/32) to the towed vehicle. Respective ECUs 29, 43 on the tractor and trailer are able to communicate via an electrical connection (e.g. CAN bus). The ECUs determine whether the brake system in both vehicles is compatible with an electronic brake signal and whether the brake system is compatible with secondary supply pressure being applied via a control pressure line. If both conditions are fulfilled, the brake system actuates a switching device or devices (e.g. electrically or pneumatically controllable 3/2 valve(s) 27, 42) on the towing and towed vehicles to direct air from the means for supplying a control pressure 28 to a second pneumatic supply circuit 36, 47 in the towed vehicle. The supply pressure may only be switched if a fault is detected in a primary supply, for redundancy.
