A parachute assembly 116 comprising a parachute canopy 120, a first reefing line 126-1 attached to an edge of the canopy to restrict inflation; a second reefing line 126-2 comprising a reefing line insert coupled between a first portion of the first reefing line and a second portion of the first reefing line; and a cutter (302-1, figure 3) configured to break the second reefing line in response to a passing of an elapsed time period after a first triggering event, wherein the breaking of the second reefing line causes the first reefing line to lengthen. Additionally provided is the parachute assembly as defined and comprises a second cutter that is configured to break the second reefing line in response to a passing of a second elapsed time period after breaking the first reefing line. The one or more reefing lines may limit inflation of the canopy to attenuate impulse load or otherwise mitigate forces exerted by the parachute assembly on cargo or an occupant during deployment of the canopy. The one or more reefing lines may be broken in stages to selectively limit inflation of the canopy followed by selectively permitting inflation of the canopy in stages.
