A structure for reducing drag on a ship has an adjustable support structure 3020-1’, 3020-2’ maintaining shape of a surface cover (3010-1’, 3010-2’, fig 13a). The support can be height adjustable or inflatable, and the cover a polymeric shell or fabric, metal sheet (e.g. Corten), on a front deck of the ship. A method uses a parameter such as speed; load capacity; ship or equipment shape, layout or size to optimise the shape. The shape can be determine using an iterative or generative design algorithm.
