A method of head‐up display for a vehicle. comprises displaying a hologram of an image on a display device, such as a spatial light modulator (SLM) and spatially modulating light in accordance with the displayed hologram to form a holographic wavefront. The wavefront is then replicated in a in a first direction using a first pupil expander 520 to form a 1D array of replicas of the wavefront. A windscreen 540 of the automobile is used as a second pupil expander to form a 2D array of replicas of the holographic wavefront from the one-dimensional array of copies. The two-dimensional replicas may be generated by waveguiding the 1D array within the windshield interior via a plurality of transmissions and reflections. Contiguous angular ranges of the wavefront may correspond with adjacent areas of the image (Fig. 2). Narrowband filters may be employed. An associated system is also disclosed.
