The present disclosure relates to an intelligent electric energy meter, a network of distributed intelligent electric meters, a method for controlling and balancing the load of a network of distributed electric meters, and a method for improving the safety of a network of distributed electric meters. The network of distributed electric meters 110 may comprise a central device for controlling and managing the network of meters, each meter for measuring voltage, current, power, energy and for controlling a hybrid or electric vehicle charger 140, and a global meter 120 for measuring the local grid and isolating the network of meters. The local meters may comprise load emulation means to generate an electric current for controlling EV chargers that uses a current clamp. The voltage drop between a reference meter and each local meter may be monitored and kept within a safety range or meters in the network may be de energised if a safety limit is reached.
