A steer by wire steering column assembly for a vehicle has a shroud with first and second shroud portions 13, 14 constrained to move telescopically relative to one another for reach adjustment. A shaft 11 for supporting a handwheel or other user operable device is supported in the shroud by one or more bearing assemblies within the shroud. A linear actuator including an elongate threaded rod (18, Figure 8(a)) is connected to one shroud portion 13 by a first bracket 19 and at a second location to the other shroud portion 14 by a second bracket 20, and controls the telescopic position of the shroud by causing the threaded rod to rotate. At least one of the brackets 19, 20 provides a degree of lost motion between the linear actuator and the associated shroud portion 13, 14, accommodating misalignment of the shroud portions which would otherwise apply a bending moment to the linear actuator. A handwheel actuator 10 comprising such a steering column is also provided.
