An aircraft fuel system has a fuel tank 20, a valve 3, and a valve actuator 1 with a control input 8. The actuator is configured to open the valve in response to command signals generated by a control system 5, and applied on the control input, releasing fuel vapour and ventilating the fuel tank. A method of ventilating an aircraft fuel system is also claimed including the step of assessing a suitability for release of fuel vapour, and opening the valve on the basis of the assessment. The suitability assessment may use sensors 31-36 to consider environmental conditions about the aircraft, location of the aircraft such as global position or altitude, the future route of the aircraft, and/or whether fuel vapour emissions have exceeded a threshold; the environmental conditions may be air composition such as air quality, nitrogen oxide level, carbon dioxide level or ozone level.
