An apparatus 1 for monitoring the use of a safety harness, such as used on a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) anchor point, has an aperture 6 adapted to receive a connector, such as a carabiner. A detector determines the presence of the connector by a change in inductance of an inductive loop mounted to the aperture and an output from the inductive loop is fed to a MEWP circuit, possibly including a relay, inhibiting movement of the MEWP if the connector is absent. A visual indicator shows the operator that the connector of the harness has been detected. The induction loop cable, which may have signal, power and ground connections, may be housed in a hollow multistrand flexible steel cable and a supply rail to an e-stop, or dead man’s switch, may be connected to the MEWP relay.
