Underwater imaging apparatus comprises a source of electromagnetic radiation 101 configured to generate a short-range illuminating beam 103 at a selected wavelength. It also has an image sensor 109 sensitive to the selected wavelength for generating image data 113 representing a scene or object 150 illuminated by the beam. The selected wavelength may be in the near or short wavelength infra-red range. The apparatus may have a sensor 120 to measure the turbidity of the participating medium (i.e. water) and a controller 111 able to vary the beam’s power or wavelength based on the turbidity measurement to control the range of radiation. There may be a collimator 115, and a timing system (Fig. 2, 219) to control exposure parameters for the sensor, e.g. the timing or duration of the activation of the image sensor or radiation. The source of radiation may be tuneable within a range of 900-3000nm. The beam may be pulsed such that time of flight measurements can be taken at the sensor. The beam may be scanned. The exposure of the image sensor may be gated to generate image data at selected distances. The underwater imaging apparatus may be part of a platform.
