An electric vehicle battery charging control system which calculates, using the journey start time 102, and in dependence on a target battery charge level 104 and a target battery operating temperature range 106, a charging start time 108 at which to start charging of the traction battery to charge the battery toward the target charge level and heat the battery, due to charging of the battery towards a target temperature, and output a control signal to a charger. The charging may take place in two phases (302, 304, Fig. 3). The charging start time may depend on the battery state of charge 502 and temperature 506, battery capacity, charger power 504, calculated heat caused by charging, and the battery thermal capacity. The controller may make use of auxiliary heating (616, Fig. 6) if the joule heating is not sufficient. The journey start time may be set by the user, or may be predicted, perhaps by machine learning, based on historical usage patterns or the user’s schedule. The predicted start time may be confirmed or adjusted by the user. The target state of charge may be set by the user, or to a default or predicted level.
