A road monitoring device uses a mirror locator to determine positional information and size information of a mirror 130 located at an intersection 120 between two roads122, 124. An object detection sensor is configured to detect an object 134 and further configured to determine a perceived position of the object 134. Determining the perceived position comprises emitting a sensing signal and receiving a reflection of the sensing signal. A processor is configured to determine that the object 134 and the road monitoring device positioned on different roads 122, 124 based on the positional information and the size information of the mirror and the perceived position of the object 134. The sensor may also be configured to determine motion information of the object such as speed and direction. The object detection sensor may be a LiDAR sensor. The mirror location may be determined by processing image data.
