The invention relates to a charging unit for electric vehicles. The unit 1 weighs 50 kg or less, and comprises: a plurality of NMC cells with a total capacity of at least 3 kWh; an AC mains inlet; a Type 2 charging outlet; an air-cooled bidirectional AC-DC converter, providing an AC charging output of at least 3.6 kW at a current of at least 16A; an integrated electronics module; a carry handle 2, and possibly wheels 3. The unit could have the facility to add or remove cells 6 in spaces 5 to increase capacity or reduce weight, respectively. The unit could also provide a detachable unit (7) with its own charging outlet which can be used as a separate power pack.
