A head rest 4 with a primary surface 16 for supporting a user’s head, and a deployable structure 37 that can extend laterally from the primary surface (16, Figure 6) to increase the effective width of the headrest 4. The structure 37, which can be partially retained within the remainder of the head rest 4 when in the stowed position and moved along a guide rail when deployed, can be formed of a rigid structure covered in a softer material 38; and can be deployed by a piston-and-cylinder actuator (26, 31, Figure 6) or a pyrotechnic actuator, which in turn can be actuated by an inertia latch or a vehicle crash recognition system (36, Figure 7). Also provided are a seat (1, Figure 1) having the headrest 4; and a vehicle (101, Figure 7) with the headrest 4 and/or seat (1, Figure 1).
