A blade seal 200 for sealing a gap between first 10 and second 20 aircraft components, comprising a flexible seal member (205, figure 3C) having a first end (202, figure 3A) for attaching to the first aircraft component and a second end (204) for extending towards the second aircraft component, a sensor 240 (e.g. piezoelectric sensor) and an actuator 250 (e.g. piezoelectric actuator) directly coupled to the flexible seal member, wherein the sensor detects flexible seal member deformation and sends a signal to the actuator in response to the detected deformation, the actuator imparts a load on the flexible seal member and activates only in response to the signal received directly from the sensor by the actuator so as to counter the detected deformation of the flexible seal member. The load may cancel out the detected deformation. The sensor and/or the actuator may be embedded in the flexible seal member.
