An aircraft braking performance indicator is determined from braking performance information received from multiple aircraft 40 that have landed on a particular runway The indicator is communicated to a landing system of an approaching aircraft 10 that is about to land on said runway. The received information may comprise wheel slip determined by a braking system of the landed aircraft, e.g. a profile of braking performance as a function of aircraft position on the runway. The braking performance indicator may represent a condition of the runway. It may be a weighted average of the braking performance information weighted towards recent landing events. If a deviation between information of the most recent and an earlier landing event exceeds a threshold, a predetermined braking performance indicator may be used. A landing distance of the approaching aircraft on the runway may be determined and communicated instead of or as well as the braking performance indicator.
