A self-standing temporary traffic light base unit 1 and has a receiver (socket 29, Fig.6) for receiving a connector 30 of a wire (32, Fig.7) which transports traffic light signals. A permanently erected traffic light pole 9 is installed by connecting the wire via the connector to the base unit to operate a temporary traffic light signal head; erecting a permanent traffic light pole nearby; disconnecting the connector and removing it from the base unit via an aperture (Fig.8); threading the connector and wire through an underground tunnel into the permanent pole; and connecting the connector to a further receiver (socket 35, Fig.13) in the pole to switch traffic light signals from the temporary base unit to the permanent pole. Also claimed is a moveable traffic signal base unit comprising a housing containing ballast and a control unit with a socket secured to the unit. Also claimed is a traffic light pole comprising a control unit with a receiver for plugging in a rail connector.
