A motor vehicle part provided with decorative element. The method of providing the decorative element comprises applying a plurality of paint layers to an electro-deposition coated panel, wherein the plurality of paint layers comprise at least a first and a second basecoat layer, and using a laser to selectively remove one or more paint layers, wherein the laser does not remove the electro-deposition coat. The paint layer may be provided in different colours. A clearcoat layer may be applied on top of the decorative element, providing an even finish. A primer layer may be applied to the electro-deposition coating prior to the application of the paint.
