A computer-implemented method of obtaining an aircraft excursion report comprising: obtaining, storing and time-stamping data from sensor(s); operating a vision system (e.g. LIDAR, infrared or visible light camera) to detect the aircraft leaving a runway or taxiway, recording an excursion period start time based on the detection time; compiling an excursion report. The excursion report comprises the time of excursion period and a subset of the sensor data time-stamped during the excursion period. Image data may be processed to detect a runway edge by detecting edge markings 34, edge lighting 36, or runway centreline 32. Sensor data may be indicative of aircraft acceleration, centre of gravity and mass distribution, engine parameters, wheel speed, brake pressure, fuel quantity. The runway excursion report may be compiled in response to an excursion severity level exceeding a predetermined threshold. An alert may be generated in response to aircraft leaving the runway tarmac.
