Parallel use of a reserved road space 55RES (e.g. bus lane or high-occupancy vehicle lane) by scheduled vehicles and unscheduled autonomous vehicles (AV) 2011 comprises determining a route for the unscheduled AV. The route is used with real-time infrastructure sensor information about scheduled vehicle locations to predict conflicts between the scheduled unscheduled vehicles. Conflict avoidance instructions are generated for the unscheduled AV. Also disclosed is a system for operating a transport network 10 for scheduled vehicles and unscheduled AV comprising public transit communication unit 220 for receiving scheduled vehicle location data from a public transit management center 250; infrastructure communications unit 215 for communicating with infrastructure elements 80 and unscheduled AV and receiving unscheduled AV location data; and control management processor 205 for calculating conflict avoidance instructions there-from. The conflict prediction may use a scheduled traffic pattern model (time-table) and the instructions may be transmitted to the infrastructure elements to notify an AV to adjust its speed or route to avoid the conflict. The scheduled vehicles may be buses, cable-cars, trams, streetcars, or other public transit vehicles.
