A lifting hook 10 has a linear mid-section 14 and a first curved section 16 extending from the mid-section and ending in a toe 22 for inserting into an aperture (32 fig.9) in a pile foundation casing (30 fig.9), such as a drill casing. A second curved section 21 extends from the mid-section opposite the first curved section and has a flattened distal end defining an eye or hole 13. The first and second curved sections may have radii of curvature of about 1 and 2 inches respectively. A handle 20 may be integral with the mid-section and the toe may have a bevelled edge 17 whilst the first curved section may be shaved or indented 18 to ease the hook through the casing aperture
