A measurement device for measuring the thickness of a live contact wire, such as those used in overhead line equipment (OLE) for electric trains. The measuring device 400 includes an elongate arm with a hook 402 located at one for hooking the contact wire, and a laser rangefinder 406 mounted on the arm at a fixed position a known displacement from the hook. The laser rangefinder measures a distance to the contact wire, this value is subtracted from the known displacement of the range finder from the hook end to calculate the diameter of the contact wire from which the thickness is derived. The measured diameter / thickness may be compared to an expected value to calculate total wear of the wire such that a determination of whether the contact wire should be replaced can be made. Preferably, the device is mounted on an electrically insulated non-conductive pole 401 to be held by an operator. Ideally, the device transmits the thickness measurements to a remote device 408 held by the operator.
