An uplock, suitable for aircraft landing gear, has an engager, such as a hook 310 that is changeable between a first state, at which it is configured to engage with a landing gear system part (fig.3), such as part of the landing gear 499 or bay door 299, and a second state, at which it is configured to disengage from that part (fig.2); a retainer or latch 320 that is changeable between a locked state, where it prevents the hook changing state and disengaging, and an unlocked state, which permits the change of the hooks state; and a linkage 340,370 configured to cause the latch to unlock should the part of the landing gear system become disengaged from the hook, as a result of failure of the landing gear part or lower portion of the hook, for example. Preferably, the linkage has a member 340 which is moved by the landing gear part when it is in the hook, the member connected to the latch, and biased by a spring 350, so that the member moves into the gap of the hook should failure occur and the gap becomes empty, causing the retainer to change to its unlocked state.
