A manually operable height adjustable platform 2 has a platform 8 mounted to a base 4 via an extensible scissor mechanism 12. An actuation system 36 controls movement of the platform under a biasing force applied by a drive strut 30 mounted between the platform and the base. The actuation system has a manual actuator 38 connected to a pinion, such as gear 52, configured to a engage a rack 54 on the platform and scissor mechanism/base. A manual actuator may be mounted above the platform for operating the actuation system by an operator and the actuator may have a reduction gear system. An override mechanism (86 fig.8) may be mounted below the platform to allow the platform to be lowered without actuation of the manual actuator and a locking mechanism (68 fig.8) may restrict platform height movement. A braking system may be disengaged when a pin 130 is actuated when the platform is in the lowered position.
