A system for recording and validating use of an electric vehicle rechargeable battery includes geographically distributed metered charging points. Electric vehicles having rechargeable batteries can charge at any of the charging points. Charging points and vehicle batteries include logic to store blockchains, and when a charging event is detected, a transaction record is created which contains details of the energy flow, a timestamp, and a hash function to combine signatures from both parties and blockchains to provide proof of the transaction, and appending the transaction to both blockchains. Charging events may then be verified by comparing ledgers of vehicle batteries with the charging points.
