A device 10 for rescuing a person from a body of water comprises an elongate strop 100, a Y-shaped line 200 and two or more floats 300. The strop is configured such that it sinks in water. The Y-shaped line begins at an end of a major line 210 of the y-shaped line, extends along a length of the major line to a point 240, where the major line bifurcates into first and second minor lines 220 and 230. An end of each minor line is attached to an opposite end of the strop. At least one float is attached to the first minor line and at least one float is attached to the second minor line. The positioning of the floats along the lengths of the first and second minor lines determines a depth to which the strop may sink below the surface of the body of water. The strop is resiliently deformable from a linear, deployment configuration to an arcuate, recovery configuration.
